Evaluation

Exercise 1 - Terrain Surface
  1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic? Some knowledge.
  2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic? I know enough to teach someone else.
  3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn? Strongly Agree.
  4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make the activity even better? This activity is a very nice way to start the course and jump-starts our critical thinking skills and team-working skills for the semester.
Exercise 2 - Visualizing and Refining Terrain Survey
  1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic? A good amount of knowledge.
  2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic? I am an expert.
  3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn? Strongly Agree.
  4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make the activity even better? The tools used in the ArcGIS portion of this exercise were pretty self-explanatory and I don't think we needed much more guidance on any of parts of the exercise. This exercise again really utilized our critical thinking skills.
Exercise 3 - Field Navigation Map
  1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic? A good amount of knowledge.
  2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic? I know enough to teach someone else.
  3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn? Agree.
  4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make the activity even better? I think that the overall activity was not difficult to understand and complete but if we could have gone over the differences between geographic coordinate systems and projected coordinate systems and why we need both would be nice, even though this is basic knowledge for an advanced course like this.
Exercise 4 - Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Mission Planning
  1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic? No knowledge at all.
  2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic? I know enough to teach someone else.
  3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn? Strongly Agree.
  4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make the activity even better? This was a very fun and entertaining exercise to do and I think that it doesn't really need any tweaking. It is a great activity as it is.
Exercise 5 - Creating a Geodatabase with Domains
I think that this is a very important skill to have not only in the field but also in an geospatial work setting. I think that you should require students to do the video tutorial though, because that is a very cool skill to develop, although I'm not sure how well spoken I am in my own video.
Exercise 6 & 7 - ArcPad Data Collection
  1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic? Some knowledge.
  2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic? I am an expert.
  3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn? Strongly Agree.
  4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make the activity even better? This is the most important skill in collecting data in the field and this exercise really did a good job of teaching us how to collect data. I think that if we only did the data collection on the ArcCollector instead of ArcPad it would be more useful and we would have been able to collect more points in the amount of time we had.
Exercise 8 - Distance & Azimuth
  1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic? No knowledge.
  2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic? I know enough to teach someone.
  3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn? Strongly Agree.
  4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make the activity even better? I think that having a more accurate GPS reading for the benchmark point would make the post processing easier, but not a big deal. Otherwise everything ran smooth and I learned a lot.
Exercise 9 & 10 - Topographic Survey (Dual Frequency GPS & Total Station)
I think that having each group test the equipment with test points really helped us understand how to use the equipment very well. I think that creating a YouTube video tutorial as a reference when the groups are gathering their individual points would be very useful.
Exercise 11 - Navigation with Map & Compass
I think this exercise was very straight forward although some groups didn't have the points that we were navigating to on their maps. If we had a larger study area in exercise 3 that would be fixed. Great weather for this exercise though!
Exercise 12 - Navigation with GPS
This was a pretty straight forward assignment and I can't think of anything that would improve it.
Exercise 13 - UAS Flight
  1. Prior to this activity, how would you rank yourself in knowledge about the topic? No knowledge.
  2. Following this activity, how would you rate the amount of knowledge you have on the topic? I know enough to explain what we did.
  3. Did the hands-on approach to this activity add to how much you were able to learn? Strongly agree.
  4. What types of learning strategies would you recommend to make the activity even better? There could be more hands on learning in the setup parts of this exercise but overall I learned many things about UAS I didn't know and any further studies could be acquired in a UAS course.
